What happens if you drive without a valid vignette
5 min
Driving without a valid vignette on European motorways can lead to significant fines. Enforcement is handled through automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras and roadside checks.
In Austria, fines start at 120 EUR and can go up to 300 EUR for repeat offenses. Hungary uses a similar system with fines ranging from 50,000 HUF upwards. Switzerland is particularly strict, with penalties reaching 200 CHF plus the cost of the mandatory annual vignette.
It is always safer and cheaper to purchase your vignette before entering a toll road. With e-vignette, you can buy one in under 60 seconds.
